Bonsai Tree Care

By | Uncategorized | No Comments
The Bonsai 盆栽, is a beautiful and intriguing plant, which Takes its name from the meaning ‘tray planting’ derives from the Japanese art form using trees grown in containers.
The Bonsai is a beautiful and intriguing plant to have in your home, however they do require proper care. Here are a few tips on how to care for your Bonsai.

Watering requirements

Bonsai trees have a very specific watering Requirements. Your plans I will only need watering once a week or so. Once you feel the topsoil is completely dry immerse the entire bonsai plant in a basin of washing up bowl a quarter full.
Once you see air bubbles have risen to the top, the bonsai has absorbed enough water.
Where to put your bonsai

The bonsai is a versatile plant that will fit into a variety of living spaces.
Since it’s not technically a plant, but a tree, it makes a unique and enchanting addition to a room or outdoor space. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of sunlight, direct sunlight is always best.
Prune your bonsai
Although a miniature tree, your Bonsai will still need to be trimmed. The best way to keep on top of it is to trim your Bonsai regularly to keep its shape. Bonsais are somewhat of an art form, you can be as creative with your pruning as you wish to. We recommend using clippers not scissors.
Follow these steps and your Bonsai should flourish!

Remember, remember on the 5th of November…

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Bonfire night is a great night of the year to celebrate with Family and friends. The majority of injuries that happen as a result of November 5th celebrations occur at family or private parties, rather than at publicly organised displays. If you are holding a bonfire / fireworks party, having proper precautions in place can help to ensure the safety of your guests, and you. Here are a few tips to help you keep your garden safe on Bonfire Night.

Choose your bonfire materials carefully

If you are intending to build a bonfire, think carefully about the materials you put on to burn. Burning a bonfire can be an opportunity to get rid of old furniture, fencing and other rubbish. Just because something is made of wood, it doesn’t mean its safe for a bonfire. The best materials for a bonfire is dry wood that burns quickly, untreated wood, leaves and brambles.

Build your bonfire on the day

When building a bonfire its best to build it as close to the time you tend to light it. Small animals such as hedgehogs and other small wildlife animals may nest in your built up mound if they are given the opportunity. Therefore if you build just before lighting there is less chance of small wildlife homing in there.

Look around you

Make sure the surrounding areas of the bonfire are safe. Choose your spot carefully, make sure the area around is clear of any items that could catch fire, once a fire catches it spreads which can be extremely dangerous. This includes checking overhead. You should also make sure that there is at least 25 meters between your bonfire and your spectators.

Do not use petrol

Although petrol can help speed up the rate in which a fire ignites, when using petrol or paraffin, things can very quickly spiral out of control. A drop of petrol or paraffin on your grass and the fire could spread. Saving some time lighting your bonfire is not worth the catastrophic damage that it could cause to you and your home.

Have water on standby

Being vigilant when running a bonfire is essential. Even if only lighting a small uncontrolled bonfire or letting off a few fireworks is crucial to keep water on hand just in case something goes wrong. This is a simple as having a small bucket filled with water or a hosepipe close to you and making sure that anything it is never left unattended. Once the fire is out you should also make sure to dump it down completely and remove any flammable materials from the site.

Keep an eye on children

Always keep an eye on small children as the majority of injuries caused by bonfire night activities and that happening to younger people either because they are not being supervised or because the children do not take take you seriously.

The majority of injuries caused by Bonfire Night activities end up happening to young people, either because they are not being supervised or because their Parents are do you not take a fire safety seriously. Did you know that simple sparkler reaching temperatures of 2000°C?

Know the law

As you know there are various rules and regulations on how to stay safe on bonfire /  firework night. It’s worth familiarising yourself with these regulations in advance no need to stay safe also to avoid fines and even imprisonment. On most nights it is illegal to set a firework off it’s between 11 PM and 7 AM when on bonfire night the cut-off point is midnight. When it comes to bonfires it is illegal to burn domestic waste that will give off harmful fumes. You can find out more about these regulations on your local authorities website.

Pumpkin Know How

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

With Halloween fast approaching it’s that time of year again to start thinking about pumpkin carving. Leading supermarkets are already selling pumpkin carving kits. The kits tend to contain a scoop and a pumpkin carving tool. Here are a few pumpkin carving tips to get you started.

Choose a good pumpkin

When choosing a pumpkin, opt for one that looks fresh, has a sturdy not soft stem, and that has a flat bottom (this will prevent the pumpkin from rolling)

Scoop it up

Using the scoop, thin the inner wall of what will be the pumpkins face to 1 1/4 inch thick. This will make it easier to pierce the shell.

Don’t waste it!

Before you throw away the pulp from the pumpkin think about all the tasty things you could make apart from the obvious pumpkin soup, what about making your own pumpkin pie, muffins, pumpkin cake, pumpkin bread or even pumpkin curry!

Going spare?

Get creative with the left overs! There are some very cool things you can do with the left overs, i.e. create a tongue out of the discarded pumpkin shell.

Keep it fresh

Spreading petroleum jelly aka Vaseline on the edges of your pumpkin will help to seal in moisture. To keep your pumpkin fresh try reviving it by soaking it face down in cold water for up to eight hours.

Let the heat out

Always cut a hole in the lid when using candles to let out any smoke or save yourself the stress and go with battery-operated imitation candle instead.

Safety

Choosing a battery-operated light is a safer option when lighting your pumpkin. Unattended candles burn through quickly and aren’t completely safe. With a battery-operated light not only are you being safe, you can achieve lighting effects that you cannot achieve with a candle.

Heat things up this Autumn

By | Fire pit, Garden Ideas, Small Garden | No Comments

Evenings drawing closer and weather getting colder, sound familiar to you? It does to us, unfortunately we believe that’s what you call summer ending and the dreaded Autumn closing in. However, just because the sun is becoming a distant memory doesn’t mean those fun warm evenings, accompanied by your nearest and dearest with a glass of your favourite poison, has to be too.

Whenever we talk about our favourite parts of summer here at Rightcut Tree and Garden Services, everyone seems to be in agreement-the long evenings. You know, that small pocket of time during the day where the kids, regardless of age aren,t swarming round your feet and you can sit back and reflect on the day gone by. Or if you’re feeling even more adventurous, maybe even with a bottle of vino and a barbecue in tow. So what happens when that pocket of time suddenly shrinks? When the sun rolls in faster, the clouds get darker and you’re finding yourself wanting to sit on the sofa instead of your a garden chair? Fire pits, that’s what happens.

Fire pits are a great way to extend evening time in the garden without worrying about the lack of light or heat. Fire pits create the perfect centre piece whether entertaining guests or just yourself. Fire pits help transition between the sun going down and the darkness coming in, providing a great amount of light with the majestic movements of the roaring orange flames – an attraction for all ages. Staring into the fierce, smouldering, blaze for too long may confuse you into believing you’re in a hazy sandstorm in a boiling hot dessert, because a fire pit will not only brighten up the garden, it will provide an unexpected amount of heat for those surrounding it.  Fire pits provide such a huge amount of heat that they are well known to be used as a source of warmth for groups of people, and also a cooking aid. Many fire pits come equipped with grilling shelves allowing those using it, to char your favourite sausages or burgers!

Feel like you’re missing an essential centre piece in your garden to help transition between summer and autumn? Then a fire pit may be the perfect accessory you never knew you needed.

September Gardening Advice

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

With the Autumn Equinox on Friday 22nd September fast approaching, summer 2017 seems to have gone by in a flash. The kids are going back to school, the wetter weather is becoming more frequent and the birds are starting to travel south for the winter.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, September is a great month to start preparing your garden and plan for Autumn/Winter. Here are some September gardening tips compiled by our team here at Right Cut Tree and Garden Services.

We advise planting root balls before winter as this allows the plants to adjust to their growing environment before harsh winter weather arrives. Sewing in September allows your plants to flourish in time for next spring.

Raised beds or potted plants are also a worthy investment for your garden as they help to prevent water logging. Raised beds are a speciality of ours, with our creative input we can help you create some beautiful arrangements for your garden.

In addition to plants, September is also the time to move any trees and foliage in your garden without jeopardising their survival. Don’t forget to give your hedges a final trim to create shaping to last during the winter period.
